Clothes In Cambodia(Sampot) By Borey
Cambodia located in South East Asia. The culture is similar to Lao and Thailand.
National clothes of Cambodia as well as SAMPOT. Sampot is one kind of national garment of Cambodia. The dress is similar to those worn in neighboring countries of Lao and Thailand.
There are many variations of Sampot and there are a lot of style of Sampot too. But now I''ll tell all of you 8 styles of Sampot:
- Sarong:
is the typical Sampot worn by men and women of lower class, it is tied to safety secure it on the waist.
- Sampot Chang Kben:
is used in the beginning of the twentieth century, Sampot Chang Kben is preferred clothes for women of upper and middle classes( daily wear), it is worn by wrapping it around the waist, stretching it away from the body and twisting the knot. The knot is then pulled between the legs and held by metal belt. Cambodia Ancient wore Sampot Chang Kben everyday. Nowadays, all classes of Cambodian women wear Sampot Chang Kben on special event( engage ceremony, married ceremony, participate ceremony at royal palace...etc). Men also wear it, but the traditional patterns depend on gender. Sampot Chang Kben, people like to wear by Sampot Phamuong and Sampot hol, it cost high or low price it depend on quality of textile that made by silk
- Sampot Tep Apsara:
Sampot Tep Apsara Angkor is famous in Khmer Empire era. Sampot Tep Apsara found on Apsara carving in Angkor Wat temple.
Sampot Tep Apsara had tied on the waist with their style of golden belt, drop a long pleat at the middle of Sampot which the length of that fabric recoil at the calf of the leg. The hem of skirt at the both part always get a small knot up. There are 2 kinds come from the waist of Sampot with left knot is the long knot like the thin long fabric while the right knot in the same physical appearance, but more decoration at the middle of it knot. Now, no one wear this kind of Sampot, but people use in the show of Apsara dance.
- Sampot Samloy:
Sampot Samloy was known to be popular during Chaktomok era. Sampot Samloy is a skirt used daily for men and women. The style of dress had been require to hold a knot. It is necessary to make a fold at the left or right side like Sarong.
- Sampot Chorabab:
is a long skirt of silk embroidered all cover the gold thread, worn by woman Khmer classical dance.
- Sampot Sei Soy:
is a kind of skirt of one color with a gold or silver embroidered band along a lower ham. Today, this skirt is very popular among Laotian's lady than Khmer people.
- Sampot Lbak:
is a long skirt covered with entirely silk embroidery. Today it is worn in marriage ceremonies. In ancient times, this kind of Sampot is mostly worn by Noblemen of Cambodia during Lovek era.
- Sampot Anlon:
is a long skirt with the vertical stripes, commonly worn by old people or farmer in the countryside. This one is share highly common to Burma's.
